Facebook iPhone App 3.1 Update

I was excited to find an update for the facebook app today an quickly clicked to see the update log. OooOo push notifications and phonebook syncing.

I have previously used a helpful facebook to apple address book syncing utility aptly named Address Book Sync. I don’t use it on the regular, however, because i’m a real time sync kind of guy. That’s why my iPhone uses email, calendar, and contact syncing using google sync’s exchange protocol.

As gigaom’s the Apple Blog notes

Contact syncing seems to be a little hiccupy at the moment, but that might only be because I’m also using MobileMe to sync my address book across all computers. It does appear to be working very slowly despite some error messages, though, but I find that the “fb://” format links don’t open anything on the Mac. Probably because the Facebook app developers didn’t count on people who have a desktop syncing system implemented. They automatically launch the FB app on the iPhone, though.

I experienced similar problems syncing with the contacts on my iPhone. Furthermore, my contacts on the iPhone were momentarily wiped out by the facebook update sync errors. I’m inclined to think that the problem lies with the iPhone pinging the google server as each change is made locally by the facebook sync action. I’m just sayin…
